Taking Your Car For Repair During The Pandemic

COVID-19 protocols and regulations in the counties of the state of California were issued last March 09, 2021.

The L.A. county has moved into the “red” tier, which means almost most non-essential businesses can only open with limited capacity. Because of the restrictions and stay-at-home orders, many people work from home, which leads to fewer cars on the road, reducing wear on motor vehicles, lowering the need to repair and maintain them.

Based on the state’s information as of Tuesday, the county’s balanced case rate was 5.2 per 100,000 of the population, whereas its seven-day average test positivity rate stood at 2.5. Once all criteria get met, L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that at a briefing Monday, she anticipates reopening could be changed back within 48 hours of the announcement.

This change could be due to the expected influx of people dining, movie theaters, malls, gyms, and visiting friends. She expressed that she anticipates that declaration to be made in the following week.

A few repair shops have taken safety precautions to proceed to continue their business amid the pandemic. These precautions entail wearing gloves and masks in a customer’s car while sanitizing steering wheels and shift knobs before vehicles get returned. Others offer to pick up customers’ cars from their homes or essential workplaces so that mechanics can overhaul them without risking the clients of possible exposure to the virus. Requests for this kind of service may continue post-COVID-19 as clients may discover it a more practical option.

There are a few issues that time on the road would not be able to fix. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, your vehicle may be due for scheduled repairs, or it may break down or have a search engine light.

While some states have issued stay-at-home orders, repair shops and dealership services have been considered essential and should remain open. Here are the steps we suggest taking if your car needs servicing.

Call ahead

Make a call to your car repair center or dealership. It might have reduced hours during the pandemic, so make an appointment rather than just walking in to save time checking your vehicle in. It’s also possible that if you need regular maintenance, it’s worth deferring until the social-distancing protocols are no longer required. If you don’t drive much or the maintenance is minimal, you may be able to put it off. Your service representative will assist you in making this decision.

Plan to wait or arrange transportation

You might decide to wait if the desired service isn’t going to take long. Inquire ahead of time about the waiting area and whether maintaining the recommended distance from staff and other customers would be challenging. Inquire whether the place gets sanitized daily. Carry whatever supplies you need to ensure your protection and comfort.

When you’re using a loaner or rental car as your car’s anticipated service would take longer, make sure to sterilize regularly handled surfaces.

 Sterilize your vehicle after pickup

Your car will be clean when you get it back. However, you should still sterilize common contact points inside your vehicle for your protection and peace of mind.

In summation, your safety and security are most important. However, if you need to get your car serviced while social distancing measures remain, use these tips to ensure the safest and most accommodating experience.
