Most of us spend a lot of time looking at computers, it’s fair to say. Scrolling and swiping on social media, watching TV, or reading work notes on your phone or computer. For our eyes, that can be terrible. Electronic blue light is related to conditions such as poor vision, eyestrain, dry eye, macular degeneration, and cataracts. Some individuals have trouble with sleep. Visible light is much more nuanced than you would assume. Stepping into sunlight outdoors will also lead to exposure of the eyes to a variety of visible, and often unseen, different-colored light rays that can have a variety of impacts. Read on to learn more about blue light and how it can impact our vision.
What Is Blue Light?
The light of the sun consists of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. It becomes, when combined, the white light we see. There are particular energy and wavelength to each of these. Rays have longer wavelengths and much less energy on the red part of the spectrum. Blue rays have a smaller wavelength and more energy at the other end. A wide blue segment will have a white light that can trigger the eye from the blue end of the spectrum to a greater wavelength.
Increase the Risk of Macular Degeneration
Blue light must permeate to the retina since laboratory research has shown that too much blue light absorption can affect the retina’s light-sensitive cells. This develops modifications that mimic those of macular degeneration, which may contribute to irreversible loss of vision. While more study is necessary to evaluate how much natural and man-made blue light is too much blue light for the retina, many eye care professionals worry that the additional exposure of blue light from computer monitors, smartphones, and other electronic devices may increase the risk of macular degeneration later in life for a person.
Contributes to Digital Eye Strain
It is not as easy to concentrate since blue light scatters more quickly than other visible light. This unfocused visual noise decreases the intensity and can lead to digital eye strain when you look at computer screens and other electronic devices that emit large amounts of blue light.
Studies have shown that optics filtering blue light at a wavelength of less than 450 blue-violet light greatly improves contrast. Therefore, when you are viewing digital devices for longer periods, blue light glasses will improve comfort. In essence, to help block any of this specific spectrum of light that comes into your eyes, it will place a filter on what you see. Although there is little evidence suggesting that these glasses help digital eye strain, while using this form of light blocking glasses, several individuals have reported relief.
Greatly Affects Our Eye Health
The primary source of blue light is sunshine, and being outside during the daytime is where we gain much of our exposure to it. But several man-made, indoor sources of blue light are also available, such as fluorescent and light-emitting diode bulbs and flat-screen television.
In particular, computer monitor screens, laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices emit large quantities of blue light. Just a percentage of that radiation from the sun is the amount of HEV light these gadgets emit. But many eye doctors and other medical professionals are worried about the potential long-term impact of blue light from computers and phones on eye health because of the number of hours spent using these devices and the proximity of these displays to the human eyes.
Our Eyes Cannot Block Blue Light
For blocking ultraviolet light from entering the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eyeball, the anterior frameworks of the adult human eye, cornea, and lens are very efficient. Less than 1 percent of UV radiation from the sun touches the retina, even if you aren’t wearing sunglasses. Bear in mind, however, that 100% ultraviolet light blocking sunglasses are important to protect these and other areas of the eye from damage that could lead to cataracts, snow blindness, pinguecula, pterygium, and even cancer. On the other side, nearly all apparent blue light passes through and enters the retina via the cornea and lens.
Keeping our eyes healthy, particularly as you age, is one of our concerns throughout life. Blue light is everywhere. With unhealthy environmental conditions, our eye’s natural filters are also inadequate to protect against it. You can restrict how much time, especially at night, you spend using digital devices. It would also support your overall wellbeing if you find ways to take care of your eyes. Hope this writing has helped you to know what blue light is and its danger to your eyes.

Blue light is not all bad. Full–body exposure to blue light decreases blood pressure, lessens arterial stiffness, and improves endothelial function. Another attribute is its ability to cause subdermal fat tissue to decrease in size. In other words, it can cause fat loss. Thus, the action of sunlight may help one to stay slim or become slim. The researchers showed that daily exposure of fat cells to blue light resulted in decreased lipid droplet size and increased fat breakdown rate. The researchers had been doing research on light and diabetes, and they serendipitously found that the light could be an asset in maintaining (or producing) a slim body. The key is to go to bed early and avoid blue light at night. That way, blue light can be a healthful adjunct to well-being. For more information: Sunlightinstitute.org, and read Dr. Marc Sorenson’s book, Embrace the Sun
