Mayor Tuesdays — April 14, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth, and he calls in to talk about the latest changes in the mandates and guidelines provided by the CDC and Los Angeles City and County Health Officials. Starting tomorrow from the date of this post, people will be required to wear some type of facial covering, and stores will now have the right to refuse service to anyone without a facial covering. Also, the order for Safer At Home has been extended to half way through May. Mayor Smyth also spends some time talking about the new testing station established in Santa Clarita, and how to head there and get tested. Mayor Smyth talks in-depth about the challenges everyone is facing with the extended Safer At Home orders, and how he and the city of Santa Clarita is working extremely hard to help everyone from students to unemployed workers to small businesses. Listen to his full interview starting at the beginning of Hour 1.

Matt spends one last day covering The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Matt summarizes each of them, and reminds listeners that now more than ever is the time to adhere to these principles to finish the Safer At Home orders as a better person. Focusing on each of these habits can make all of us better in our professional lives, family lives, and everyday lives.

Our next guest is Amber Soto, Director of Mathematics at iLEAD & SCVi Schools, and she calls in to talk about some of the patterns she has seen in the behavior of her students and fellow teachers in the shift to online learning. Amber also talks about her love for escape rooms (in-person and on the internet), and how escape rooms and games similar to them are incredible learning tools to teach critical thinking skills. Math problems are similar to puzzles in that you have the pieces laid out in front of you, but you have to know the proper order in which to use them to get your answer. Amber talks about she has been developing online escape rooms of her own to administer to her students. Matt and Amber continue on to talk about “math-phobia,” and how we can finally overcome our fear of mathematics. Amber talks about how risk-taking, being incorrect, and current grading systems all contribute to the failure-averse environment math is often taught in. Some of the most successful people in the world have experienced tremendous failure in their lives, and a lot of them credit that failure for making them better or pushing them to be the person that history remembers forever. Math functions in the same way in that failure is a key component to success. Trying to get the correct answer is just as important as getting the correct answer because you don’t know what you don’t know unless you take a shot at solving the problem. Listen to Amber’s full interview and all of her advice in the first segment of Hour 2.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
