Spanish and Mental Wellness — April 27, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Erika Cedeno, Spanish Facilitator at SCVi. Erika talks about her early career, and how she almost decided to become a pediatrician instead of getting into teaching. Erika talks about how she progressed as an educator and how she has grown into her roles at SCVi and with the state. She also helps the state of California create the test administered to newly arrived Americans from Mexico. She also coaches for SCVi, and as the swim coach she loves that she can teach the learners at SCVi how to be passionate and determined in addition to being smart and educated. Erika talks about how to complete spanish projects at home and about how to learn a new language. Listen to Erika’s full interview at the top of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Ahriana Galbraith, Senior at Empower Generations High School. Ahriana calls in as part of a new segment we are doing on the show which is all about giving seniors in high school a chance to celebrate their senior year. With schools being cancelled for at least the remainder of this school year, a lot of seniors around the country will not have the chance to experience most of the same activities that other seniors usually do. Listen to Ahriana’s farewell speech at the end of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Larry Schallert, Assistant Director, Student Health & Wellness and Mental Health Wellness at College of the Canyons. Larry talks about the services College of the Canyons (COC) provides to their students and how they have stepped up to meet the challenge of distance learning. Larry and his fellow staff members are working extremely hard to give their students resources they can rely on to help them during this tough time. Larry stresses how hard college can be on us, and encourages students or anyone who is struggling emotionally to take advantage of what COC is offering. COC is very proud of being a resource for the Santa Clarita Valley, and that is no different now as the college adapts to the new normal that is always changing. Listen to Larry’s full interview at the beginning of the second hour.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about continuing to work on your mental health during this tough time. If you or a loved one may be in need of help, please check out Kristina’s website and she would be happy to help you or a loved.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
