Families in Action:  December 7, 2015

When dealing with such a rough subject as the loss of a child and the devastating pain you carry with you forever remember that you are not alone. Michael and Cary urge anyone listening to please just pick up the phone and call people, such as Compassionate Friends who exist for the sole purpose of creating a community where healing is possible.

We also want the memory of the child lost to live on forever, whether through his or her parents or the community that loves them. Its undoubtedly a much tougher fight during the holidays. “The Holidays are always a tougher time for me,” states Diane.

On Sunday, December 13, 2015, an event now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world, The Compassionate Friends 19th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting.

Compassionate Friends will host the 19th Annual Lighting of the Candles – “so their light always shines” this year at the SCV Child & Family Center on Centre Point Parkway in Santa Clarita starting at 6:30 PM.

It is not sponsored by the Center, but the ceremony will be held inside the building, and will feature poems, selected readings, music, a slide show and performances with featured singers. Annually, tens of thousands of families, united in loss, light candles for one hour during the Worldwide Candle Lighting, held the second Sunday in December. Candles are first lit at 7 p.m., local time, just west of the International Date Line. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are lighted in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light, as the observance continues around the world.

“Just to know that their life meant something — and we don’t want them to be forgotten … and we don’t want that.”
