Singing about drug use is among the most common themes in pop music. Sometimes the messages are overt and other times they are hidden in slang that cautionary parents would not detect.
In the new episode of Parents in the Mix, a podcast that reviews music from a parent’s perspective, hosts Billy Johnson Jr. and Ebony Macon Johnson discuss songs from three of pop music’s biggest acts: The Weeknd, Future, and Lana Del Rey. Each tackles the topic of drug use in a different manner.
Insiders have interpreted The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” as a reference to a sensation experienced after using cocaine. Future’s “I Thought It Was a Drought” takes a dismissive look at the discontinuation of cough syrup Actavis due to its dangerous recreational use. And on Del Rey’s “High By the Beach,” the singer turns to drugs to cope with a bad relationship.
“There are so many references to drugs in songs, we could base every episode of this podcast on that subject alone,” says Johnson, a veteran music journalist. “A lot of times, the lyrics are bold and in your face, but that’s not always the case.”
To help explain the epidemic of using cough syrup to get a high, filmmaker Thomas Gibson calls into Parents in the Mix to explain the findings in his documentary on the subject, City of Sizzurp. Gibson, who has produced documentaries on Rihanna, One Direction, the Black Eyed Peas, among others, shares promethazine and codeine usage he’s witnessed when covering hip hop artists and even visiting college campuses.
“Parents in the Mix,” a fun podcast hosted by husband and wife team Johnson and Macon Johnson, keeps parents informed, giving them the valuable insight they need into their children’s playlists.
