Parents In The Mix – September 10, 2015

This week’s episode of Parents in the Mix, a podcast devoted to keeping parents informed about their kids’ music, reviews new songs and videos from Veronica Vega (“Pay Me”), Jack Ü featuring Justin Bieber (“Where Are You Now”), and Zedd (“Beautiful Now”).

Vega, who has collaborated with Florida hip-hop heavyweights Pitbull and DJ Khaled, has sparked a buzz online for her provocative and profanity-ridden song and video for “Pay Me” in which she raps about only dating men who are willing spend money on her. In the video, she is scantily clad and displays dance moves suitable for a strip club.

Justin Bieber’s song “Where Are You Now,” a collaboration with Jack Ü duo Skrillex and Diplo, isn’t as in your face as Vega’s “Pay Me,” but a close view of the music video reveals some disturbing subliminal messages. The video flashes hundreds of graphics that range from innocent drawings to references to explicit language, promotion of drug use, and a nude sketch.

Of the three songs discussed this week, Zedd’s “Beautiful Now” is the most compelling. The video offers five thought-provoking storylines that depict people immersed in complicated situations – a young lesbian woman breaks under pressure, a teen girl attempts to take her life, a teen boy regrets his act of thievery, an elder pursues a life dream, and a boy seeks vengeance on the criminals that robbed his family.

“Ebony and I really enjoyed discussing the Zedd video,” says Billy Johnson Jr., Parents in the Mix co-host and veteran music journalist. “We had to watch it several times and really try to sort out the message and figure out how it relates to the ‘Beautiful Now’ storyline. The message about working through trying times is very strong, but young viewers may not immediately understand and will probably need some help analyzing it.”

Viewers are encouraged to share their reaction to the songs and videos in this week’s episode by posting comments below or via the Parents in the Mix pages on Facebook and Twitter.

Created by music journalist Billy Johnson Jr., the podcast is co-executive produced and co-hosted by Johnson and his wife, Ebony Macon Johnson, who also works in the entertainment business.

“Parents in the Mix,” a fun new podcast hosted by husband and wife team Billy Johnson Jr. and Ebony Macon Johnson, keeps parents informed, giving them the valuable insight they need into their children’s playlists.
