Working Together While Remaining Apart — March 25, 2020
On this episode of the Providence Holy Cross Health Hour with Tom Burton, PT, Tom starts by talking about the importance of working together and functioning as a team. Working together and uniting is one of the important ways the United States can quickly and effectively eradicate Covid-19. Without a vaccine currently available, prevention is the best form of fighting the virus and part of that prevention is staying at home. As restrictions grow tighter in many cities around the country, Tom stresses the importance of knowing your place, and how following the guidelines in place by the CDC and LA County Officials will help the country get better, faster. Tom recommends people visit Providence Holy Cross’s dedicated website regarding Covid-19 and the latest methods for how to spot symptoms and prevent the spread of the virus.
Later in the show, Dr. Doug Polster, Clinical Psychologist, calls in to the show to talk about mentally assessing yourself, and maintaining your own mental health through everything that is going on. Dr. Polster talks about how important it is to do a self-check after these first few weeks of adapting to the new reality of staying at home as much as possible. Dr. Polster recommends assessing where you’re at, how you’re feeling, and acknowledging if you aren’t feeling well. Dr. Polster follows that up by saying it is healthy and normal to feel some form of anxiety or level of nervousness in the face of the unknown factors surrounding the mortality rates of Covid-19. Dr. Polster recommends controlling the things you can control because we all have the power to stick to a set schedule. Sticking to a set schedule helps people feel more comfortable in their day-to-day routines, and Dr. Polster recommends treating weekdays like they are the same as they ever were. Dr. Polster provides the strategies and methods he uses with his patients to help them work through their worries, and how you can use that strategies in your own home.
