Hour 1 – TFS Safer Money Hour impresses on its listeners how imperative it is to be fiscally responsible in this challenging economic climate, especially for California residents whose taxes are so much higher than other states. Arif & Jeff spend the first hour explaining how to open and properly use IRAs.

IRA stands for Individual Retirement Account, and it’s essentially a savings account with major tax breaks, making it perfect for stashing away cash for your retirement years. The common misconception with individual retirement accounts is that people think an IRA itself is an investment for your retirement – in reality its the box that holds all of your investments such as the stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other assets you have money saved in.

TFS leaves listeners with this simple message: always have an emergency fund.  Jeff urges you to learn how to budget and live on 70% of your means, so that planning for everything else becomes ingrained in your family’s budget.

Hour 2 – Is there a right way to save?

Partial and full scholarships are significant ways to pay (and help pay) for college that we don’t take full advantage of.

Another way of saving for college is what is called a 529 plan, and they work much like a 401k or IRA.
