Senior Hour – December 9, 2015
The Holiday Season is a time of giving, and with open hearts come dubious and criminal elements to exploit them. In the first segment, Arif Halaby of Total Financial Solutions and Total Financial Solutions Safer Money Hour on KHTS-AM 1220 to explain how seniors are getting scammed over the phone during the holidays.
What used to be the “Nigerian scam” where an African-accented voice would call to ask for you to send money and they’d send you some back or whatnot has now moved to other parts of the world with the main scam now centering around foreign lotteries.
Arif tells a story about his aunt who got duped into sending money for what she thought was the Canadian Lottery returning her some. A major piece of advice: you cannot win the lottery in other countries if you are not a citizen and resident of that country.
Do not put or leave your packages on the front seat while doing your holiday shopping. “If you park your car in particular place and you’re loading your car and continuing to shop, move your vehicle,” urges Arif. Often times people are lurking in parking lots.
In the second segment, Barbara and Gene welcome recurring guest Kim Wahl to discuss how emotional and physical health is disrupted during the holiday season. “Unplug,” says Kim, who attributes being so locked in to our phones and electronic devices to the detriment of our overall health. “Put the phone down!”
