My Doc & Dukov – January 18, 2017

There is a common misconception in society that intimacy and/or sexual activity wanes as we age, but Alicia Dukov and Dr. Jenkins are here to let everyone know that’s not the case. On this episode of the newly formed My Doc & Dukov, we’re discussing “The Seventy-Year Itch” and more.

Factors hindering sex for seniors:

Low testosterone in men leading to weak erections

“Intimacy for seniors is difficult … because its kind of like two moving windows and they have to both line up perfectly.” – Dr. Jenkins

“A man hits his sexual peak at 18 … so when they’re in their [twenties, thirties] men aren’t as virile.” – Alicia Dukov

Alicia explains that that window opens back up for men and women to line up again in their sixties and seventies.

Reasons seniors can become more extroverted sexually in these years:

  1. Empty nest syndrome is a feeling of grief and loneliness parents may feel when their children leave home for the first time, such as to live on their own or to attend a college or university. However, this is a time where these couples can enjoy this newfound space again and reignite passion.
  2. Retirement = no more stress of the day-to-day grind. “They’ve earned their right in life to be who they are.” – Alicia

“Sometimes they say the penis can be a good barometer of the heart.” – Dr. Jenkins on how blood flow to the penis can signal how the blood is flowing in the heart
