It’s Time to Get TaxSmart – January 15, 2016

Malena opens the show presenting the topic of taxes; we love to hate them. It’s time to get “TaxSmart” with Bianca Bonilla.

There are two peak times for getting your taxes submitted: the rush is two weeks after January 19th. The other rush comes during the first two weeks of April when the last-minute filers are scrambling to get their taxes down. Basically, in the beginning of the season and at the very end of the season are the busiest times of the tax season.

“Come in March–come early March … it gives us a good amount of time to get everything done and not be rushed.” – Bianca Bonilla

In the second segment Malena offers up some important questions to Bianca regarding how to save money on taxes for young families. Bianca explains that childcare and babysitting is an easy way to save on your taxes. It is about filling out the proper forms. Request that your babysitter gets a taxpayer ID number because the state requires you to have that information in order to qualify for the credit or benefit.

“These tax credits reduce your tax liability.” – Bianca Bonilla

“Are there really tax benefits to being a home owner?” Malena asks towards the end of the second segment.

The short answer is yes. Bianca explains what itemized deductions means and how they can apply to you as the home owner.

“When you have a house you get to itemize … if your itemize deductions are higher than your standard deductions than you get to itemize.”

You might benefit from itemizing your deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A if you:
  1. Have itemized deductions that total more than the standard deduction you’d receive.
  2. Had large, uninsured medical and dental expenses.
  3. Paid mortgage interest and real estate taxes on your home.
  4. Had large, unreimbursed expenses as an employee.
