Hosts
: Barbara Cochran & Dr. Thomas Polucki
Guests: Karen Warmack of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Mark and Aimee from Guirguis and Gibbs
In the first half of the Senior Hour today, your hosts talk with Karen Warmack of the Behavioral Health Unit at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Karen talks about the importance of staying aware of “SAD” or Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD is a valid diagnosis, a form of depression and can be exaggerated this time of year. With little daylight, seniors especially should be aware of finding time in the sunlight every day. She suggests volunteering outside the home, visiting friends and family, even taking a daily walk or meditation and exercise. All of these efforts combined can help to combat the feeling of sadness this time of year. Karen and her team of therapists, psychiatrist and social workers are available to help approximately 23 patients experiencing acute psychiatric illnesses. In the second half of the Senior Hour, your hosts talk with Mark and Aimee from Guirguis and Gibbs an accounting and tax service. Mark and Aimee stress the importance of a tax reform act coming to a close at the end of 2025. They urge seniors to vote in the coming elections as the tax reform act could change if the provisions on the act expire or are extended. Seniors on a fixed income can be affected the most by a change in the act. In addition, they warn of tax scams where seniors are targeted via phone, email and mail. They remind the listeners to never give money over the phone and to verify the identity of a caller by calling your bank or credit card directly. The experts at Guirguis and Gibbs can offer assistance in tax consultation, business entity formation, bookkeeping, payroll and investment and financial planning services.
