2 Hurt in Multi-Car Rush –Hour Collision

Two people were injured Friday in a multiple-car crash on southbound Highway 14 that backed up traffic for miles during evening rush hour.

At least three cars were involved, and one overturned in the collision that shut down two lanes of the freeway and completely halted traffic for at least 15 minutes. A fourth vehicle may have been involved but left the scene, said California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Ramirez. Pam Shiller of Glendale was helping a friend move when a black sports utility vehicle allegedly moved in on the side of her Chevrolet Malibu, its driver apparently unaware of a lane merge. Shiller said the SUV hit the side of her car, sending her Malibu spinning toward the center divider. “Don’t hit the wall. Don’t hit the wall. Don’t hit the wall,” was all Shiller could think as she turned into the spin and straightened her car, she said. The Malibu wound up on the right side of the freeway with major damage.  Shiller unhurt, said she was “so happy” to be safe. A Dodge Neon also was involved in the crash. A woman who was in the SUV suffered a back injury and was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, said a firefighter with Station 73. A man complained of a shoulder injury and was taken to Holy Cross. The collision was reported just before 6:30 p.m. south of San Fernando Road. Traffic was backed up beyond Golden Valley Road as firefighters extricated victims from the wreckage and CHP officers investigated it.
