A sheriff’s sergeant shot and wounded a suspected getaway driver for shoplifters outside a Valencia department store Tuesday after the man reportedly tried to run the sergeant down.

Deputies arrested Marcelo Ruiz, 39, after a short chase from the Kohl’s parking lot to the intersection of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard just after 2 p.m. Emergency workers transported Ruiz to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor gunshot wound to his upper back.
No one else was injured in the confrontation.
Deputies later arrested Ruiz’s two purported accomplices, Luis Brunetty, 23, and Gerardo Barrera, 31, who were allegedly shoplifting inside Kohl’s and intended to flee with Ruiz, Harris said.
