The Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program will visually recognize Santa Clarita residents currently serving in the military by hanging street light pole banners.
The Santa Clarita City Council voted 4-0 to approve the program. Councilman Dante Acosta recused himself from voting on the item.
“Being a mom of a proud Marine who is now retired,” said Councilwoman Marsha McLean, “it was pretty bad when he was serving overseas and not home and (I) didn’t know how he was or anything like that. I’m assuming that this would be a really nice comfort to a family who is in that same situation. I think it will be a very popular program.”

Through the program, military personnel and their family will have the opportunity to fabricate a double-sided, 3’ x 6’ banner, which will include the person’s name, rank, branch of the military and a color photo.
The banners would remain up for a minimum of three weeks, three times per year on military-related holidays, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day, according to Tuesday’s agenda.
Those requesting a banner will be able to choose from one of four locations around Santa Clarita: Soledad Canyon Road from Camp Plenty to Canyon Country Park; Lyons Avenue from the I-5 to Main Street; Bouquet Canyon Road from Soledad Canyon Road to Festividad Drive; or Valencia Boulevard from McBean Parkway to Magic Mountain Parkway.
The Santa Clarita City Council showed support for the program, but were concerned about the cost.
The banners will be funded by each requesting individual.
The city of Santa Clarita and AAA Flag and Banner have established the annual cost to offer this program.
The cost for printing and hanging a banner for one year at three separate times would be $417.50 plus tax.
The second year would be $232.50, using the same banner, for three hangings.
“This is one time I honestly think our citizens would take great pride in being a part of this,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar. “I will absolutely be supporting people in the service and will take great pride in doing so.”
Kellar first proposed the idea of creating a program to recognize currently-serving military in Santa Clarita that was cost neutral to the city on Dec. 8, 2015.

All fine and good, I suppose. Now, when is council going to fund a year-round homeless shelter in our city? That’s what is really needed.
Get lost David. It’s obvious you never have or ever would serve our great country! You, however, enjoy the rewards of living in a free country that was brought about by our Military people who served! Find another venue to vent you anger. Gil (Former Proud Marine)
My son will graduate from Marine Boot camp on next Friday, and i would love to be able to see his face on a flag in our city. Once he is doing his part to protect and serve our nation i have no idea when i will have the opportunity to see him again. I am overwhelmed by the courage of the young men and women that serve our country i will take pride in honoring our local militants.
