Deputies arrested two people in Canyon Country Wednesday evening for allegedly being in possession of drugs and a stolen vehicle, officials said.

Around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, patrol deputies conducted a traffic stop on Lyons Avenue in Newhall for a vehicle code violation on a Volkswagen Jetta, said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The occupants were detained pending a vehicle theft investigation,” Miller said.

The driver and occupant were allegedly unable to provide any information about the vehicle or the registered owner.

“Deputies discovered cocaine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle,” Miller added.

The driver, Nixon Castillo, 26, of Canyon Country, and passenger, Lourdes Ponce, 30, of Canyon Country, were both arrested on felony vehicle theft charges and for allegedly being in possession of cocaine powder and drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

The couple was transported and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, where Ponce’s bail was set at $15,500, and Castillo’s bail was set at $26,500, according to arrest records.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
