First responders received a call about the collision at 10:35 p.m., according to Sgt. Michael Konecny. The crash took place on the 17100 block of Sierra Highway near Linda Vista street, close to the Canyon Country campus for College of the Canyons.
“Deputies responded to the location for a single car traffic collision,” he said. The car involved was a “sport utility vehicle.”
The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, he added.
The driver of the vehicle hit several objects, including the center divider and two fire hydrants before the vehicle stopped.
“It crossed the center median, sheared off a fire hydrant and hit a telephonre pole,” said Konecny.
Nobody else was injured as a result of the crash.
“The occupant of the vehicle was the only one killed,” Konecny said.
L.A. County coroners officials were on scene shortly before 1 a.m. to investigate.
The driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to his death.
