Details For I-5 Freeway Enhancement Project In Santa Clarita Revealed To Public

The details of the I-5 North County Enhancement Project, which involves construction alongside parts of Santa Clarita, were revealed Wednesday during a meeting hosted by Metro Los Angeles.

The project involves large construction projects on the I-5 Freeway in the north L.A. County from south of Parker Road in Castaic all the way to the SR-14 interchange in the Newhall Pass in an effort to enhance the freeway.

“Santa Clarita is the third largest city in L.A. County and growing,” said Isai Rosa, community relations manager with Metro Los Angeles. “We want to start with this project to accommodate population and road congestion.”

Project components were explained by Deputy Executive Officer Project Manager Paul Sullivan at the meeting which include the following:

  • 14-miles of HOV/carpool lanes in each direction
  • Four sound wall segments
  • Replacement of Weldon Canyon Road bridge
  • Seven bridge widenings
  • Extension of truck lanes
  • 13.6 miles of median paving
  • 43 retaining walls
  • Intelligent-Transportation System Improvements

Sound wall segments are expected to be constructed north of Hasley Canyon Road, Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, south of McBean Parkway and north of Calgrove Boulevard.

Currently, there is temporary construction signage on the 5 Freeway. Metro officials revealed that they anticipate construction to begin in early November, with daytime construction activities likely occurring through November and December.

Construction site preparation from the 5/14 interchange to Lyons Avenue and Pico Canyon Road is expected to occur nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in November.

Officials detailed that they expect no lane closures to occur on the upcomings holidays in 2021 and in January of 2022, including Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Total completion of the freeway project is estimated for November 2026.

  1. Let me translate this for everyone: This won’t be finished until 2030, it will double everyone’s commute time for the next nine years, and it will seriously degrade the quality of life for everyone in the SCV. Oh, and it will be way over budget.

  2. HOV lanes soon to be toll road? If not now , when.

  3. Yeah they really enhanced it 3 years or so ago, 5-14 split, 5 North down to 3 lanes from 4 what a bunch of feces, took them months to grind the road so you didn’t shatter your teeth. Wow what a waste of money. Naturally they start it before the holidays.

  4. In Bidens infrastructure bill is there any accountability built in on contractors. The 5/14 worl done several years ago was a joke with all the expense on fancy wall stone

    • Get your facts straight, this was under Trump. “The funds are to be applied toward construction costs for planned Interstate 5 improvements through the Santa Clarita Valley. The grant was awarded in mid-2018 in response to a joint application by L.A. Metro, Caltrans and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works.”

      • Regardless of what administration it was under, this taking WAY too long. With just a little work, the 5 could be four lanes all the way through. There is plenty of room. That should be the priority as it should never have been only three lanes northbound at the 14 split.

  5. Every day they’re expanding the freeway. And honestly wasn’t this already done.

  6. Unbelievably frustrating every time I sit in traffic coming up the Newhall Pass with all that space they built but somehow LOST a lane!!! I’ve lived here 23 years and dealt with I-5 Fwy construction at least HALF that time! Also, I’m in Stevenson Ranch… where is MY soundwall???

  7. What about the Neglected 14 Fwy.?!?!
