In the wash just behind the Santa Clarita landmark, the Saugus Cafe, a small brush fire broke out in medium to heavy fuel in 15 mph winds.

“We noticed a couple people running from the brush. Then we saw some smoke, and it looked like there might have been an encampment from where they were running from,” said Robert Miller, an employee at Hot Rod Hobbies and Raceways and one of the first witnesses of the brush fire. “We grabbed some hoses and (started) spraying down the area because we didn’t want to lose our businesses.”

By 12:45 p.m., Fire Station No. 126 personnel had ensured that the fire would remain in the wash, and that what had began as a 1/8 acre brush fire would only grow to approximately half an acre.

Witnesses on scene reported that LACoFD fire personnel had to call in aerial water drops from Air 5 in order to ensure that the blaze did not spread any further within the Santa Clara River wash.

Forward progress was stopped 15 minutes later, and units jumped into “mop-up mode,” according to the LACoFD Fire PIO Twitter account.

“(There were) no reported injuries, no damaged structures (and) no road closures,” according to a tweet from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station published around 1:30 p.m. “Fire should be out within the hour, and several persons (were) being detained.”

As of 1:45 p.m., there was no additional information available regarding the persons detained, or if they were the suspected cause for the fire.
