Update: Traffic appears to be back to normal, with motorists able to come and go at will again.
Heavy traffic around Magic Mountain Pkwy. and The Old Road caused significant delays for commuters.
The traffic is believed to have been caused by a medical emergency near the Magic Mountain park, drivers trying to get around the slow traffic on the I-5, Bring a Friend day at the park and a cheer competition that is occurring today.
Magic Mountain is at capacity as of 2:38 p.m. and is closed to anybody attempting to enter the park.
Anybody attempting to do so should come back another day. The best route currently to get out is to take Magic Mountain Pkwy. east to McBean.
A water main is also broken in the area, said Sgt. Vanderleek with the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.
“It’s not the main cause of the traffic,” he said, “but it’s probably not helping.”
The water main has been shut down for a few minutes, Vanderleek said, but crews have decided to “do some trenching to replace that section of pipe,” to prevent it from breaking again.
KHTS advises motorists to avoid the area for now.
If you are traveling north through the city, KHTS advises taking Valencia Blvd. to McBean Pkwy. to Newhall Ave.
If you are traveling north on the I-5, we advise getting off at Lyons Ave. or McBean Pkwy. and either re-entering after traffic clears up or taking the Newhall on-ramp.
