Helmers Elementary earned a grant for $10,000 from Seeds of Change after sharing its mission of creating a new school program that would offer real interactions and enforce regular classroom lessons in a new outdoor setting.

“It has been an amazing journey to get to this place,” said Natalie Freed, program coordinator for the Helmers School Garden. “The way our community rose up to get this program completed was truly inspiring and will remain at the heart of this School Garden. I can’t wait to watch it grow.”

On Friday, the district unveiled its efforts, aided by Lowe’s of Santa Clarita store No. 1510 employees who volunteered their time and effort to help utilize some of the school’s property in transforming an underused cement area of the school to a beautiful, lush garden for its new Garden Program.

“Every year, we look for a new project, and we’ve done many gardens, but never one that was part of a school curriculum,” said Va’a Tuilesu, manager of the Lowe’s on Bouquet Canyon Road. “One of our values as a company is being part of something bigger.”

The garden was also decorated with a mural organized by PTA members, students and volunteers.
