On May 25 around 4:45 p.m., Bennett was cycling on Placerita Canyon Road in Santa Clarita when he was fatally struck by a silver sedan from behind, which was reportedly driven by Lucas James Guidroz, 28, of Canyon Country.

Guidroz allegedly continued eastbound on Placerita Canyon Road following the collision, fleeing the scene where Bennett was pronounced dead, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

After the vehicle was located by law enforcement officials in the early morning hours two days later, Guidroz turned himself into deputies at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Bail was set at $180,000, according to arrest records.

Officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office filed charges against Guidroz on May 31.

He is facing one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run driving resulting in the death or serious injury of another person.

Guidroz pleaded not guilty to the charges against him at an arraignment hearing, and if convicted as charged, faces a maximum of 16 years in state prison.

Guidroz is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. His next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 20 at the San Fernando Courthouse.
