Residents should not be alarmed if there is fire activity in the former Albert Einstein Academy building on Orchard Village Road in Valencia, officials said.
Ventilation, as well as search and rescue drills, are being staged in the former school near Orchard Village Road and Wiley Canyon Road until Sunday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“We are extremely fortunate to get this opportunity,” said Michael Nardone, a captain with the department. “The landowners graciously allowed us to come and bang up the building before it’s demolished Monday.”
Intertex General Contractors are set to bring down the structures on the property on Monday, said Chris Cosmos, Superintendent for the company.
Crews from both Battalion 6 and Battalion 22, which serve the Santa Clarita Valley, were practicing both ventilation processes and also search and rescue, according to officials on scene.
Part of the ventilation process included responders climbing atop a structure, and puncturing a hole in the roof in order to see smoke and evaluate where fire inside the structure has spread. Chainsaws are also used to make larger holes into the ceiling to allow smoke to exit in a safer way.
The property has different structures that are made with different roofs, said an official. The variety in roofing allowed for more mixed training.
Two rooms in the larger building were being utilized for a specialty search and rescue. The rooms were pumped full of water vapor to simulate a smoke-filled room.
Teams were sent in to find and then rescue a fallen fire responder. Their goal was to rescue instead of fire combat, according to Nardone.
These drills are set to be run throughout the weekend, weather permitting.
“On Sunday, we will be running a more complete drill, from start to finish,” Nardone said.
