UPDATE: Operation Snowflake Placards Available To Castaic Residents Due To Expected Storm

UPDATE: CHP and Town Council officials have said there are currently no more placards available; however, residents are still allowed through without a placard, the placard is only to make the process a little faster for residents during the closure. More placards are being made, and an announcement will be made when more are available.

California Highway Patrol officials want to ease the commute for motorists ahead of storms expected to hit the Santa Clarita Valley this week.

With help from Castaic Area Town Council members, CHP officials in Newhall have “Operation Snowflake Residency” placards available for Castaic residents to pick up.

These placards, which are limited at the CHP Newhall office, will allow Castaic residents to make their way home when Caltrans and CHP activate Operation Snowflake, resulting in the closure of the Interstate 5 freeway at Parker Road.Operation Snowflake Placards

Placards are limited and residents can obtain them with proof of residency and a valid ID at the Newhall CHP office, located at 28648 The Old Road.

The availability of these placards comes just as a heavy rains are anticipated this week, according to National Weather Service officials.

“Rains are expected to begin (late) Thursday evening,” said National Weather Service official Tom Fisher. “They will continue to increase through Saturday, with the heaviest intensity of rainfall expected Friday.”

Winds of 20-30 miles per hour are expected, along with 2 to 4 inches of anticipated rainfall in the area and 6 to 8 inches of rainfall in the mountains, according to Fisher, with the worst of the storm to hit during the day on Friday.

“Friday won’t be a nice day to do anything,” said Fisher. “The rains will last through Friday night to Saturday, with lingering showers in the morning.”

No road closures have been announced yet, but residents can check current L.A. road closures here.

As stormy weather approaches, residents are advised that sandbags are available to pick up at their local fire station in preparation for any flooding.

Residents living near recent burn areas are also cautioned to be prepared and avoid driving through any road flooding, according to Fisher.

“Those living or driving near the Sand Fire burn area should turn around if there is any road flooding or downed trees,” said Fisher. “Slow down while driving… Expect the unexpected.”

  1. I haven’t seen anything that explains how these passes are supposed to help residents. Ok you have a placard. So what?
And the town council should have given the name a little more thought
Snowflake: Short for “special snowflake,” a pejorative for an entitled person. Most people protesting Trump are “snowflakes,” according to the alt-right, as are anti-Trump celebrities and most liberals.

    • It explains it in the article. The 5 freeway will be shut down and the placards will allow residents living in the effected area to. access their homes “These placards, which are limited at the CHP Newhall office, will allow Castaic residents to make their way home when Caltrans and CHP activate Operation Snowflake, resulting in the closure of the Interstate 5 freeway at Parker Road” Without the placards they wouldn’t be able to get to their homes because the CHP wouldn’t let them drive on the freeway.

  2. Oh good, all the precious snowflakes can feel warm for a bit

  3. Are you kidding?
    Operation SNOWFLAKE?
Who is the idiot who decided this was a good name?
Maybe Operation Snowfall or something would have been better?

  4. Who cares about the name if it gets you home. Just say thank you.

  5. CHP Station is already out of placards. Don’t waste your time.

  6. That still doesn’t’t explain howit works. Do we bypass freeway traffic on the shoulder or what? They are out of placards.

  7. As I’ve seen reference’s all over the net about people calling people, “Snowflakes”.
*Sky Ferreira with a furious riposte to what he calls “little snowflake justice warriors”: “Oh, little snowflakes, when did you all become grandmothers and society matrons, clutching your pearls in horror at someone who has an opinion about something, a way of expressing themselves that’s not the mirror image of yours, you snivelling little weak-ass narcissists?”

  8. How does it work?? Why cant residents get home without them? Wasn’t a problem before. And if they can’t, why is the supply limited? Sounds needless, impractical and insane. Are George Soros and Hillary behind this? Are the punishing us for not voting 2 or 3 times for Hillary??!

  9. Why are all of you in castaic so worried. You show your drivers license and away you go. I live in Frazier park and I get home. And we get more snow than Scv every year. Just remember to slow down.
