The parcel of land on Plum Canyon Road, near Heller Circle, is being considered as the future site of the Saugus Library according to Carrie Lujan, spokesperson for Santa Clarita.
The 12-acre plot, owned by Monteverde Development Co. of Valencia, is one of the sites being looked by the city, but a final determination on the location has not been made, officials added. If the 12-acre site is chosen, officials would only use a portion of the land for the library, Lujan said.
The discussion was held in closed session as part of an ongoing negotiation with the property owner, city officials said.
The Santa Clarita Public Library currently has three library branches located in the communities of Canyon Country, Newhall and Valencia.
The City organized a forum in November of 2016 to determine exactly what needs to be included in the proposal for the new Saugus Library, a needs assessment was recently conducted by city staff focusing on the potential future needs of the library’s service area.
Feedback from the assessment highlighted the need for a multi-use facility that would serve as a library community center and include a library, technology, innovation, meeting, recreation, art, event and learning spaces.
If Santa Clarita were to choose the 12-acre site on Plum Canyon for the Saugus Library, the proposed project would move to a regular open session of the City Council for public comment.
