Providence Holy Cross Announces ‘Quiet Time’ Program For New Moms

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has announced a “Quiet Time” program for new mothers as part of a nurse research fellowship project, and it has already shown “promising” early results, officials said Monday.

The study’s goal was to determine if breastfeeding and patient satisfaction would benefit from a designated two-hour daily quiet time for mothers with normal deliveries

During that designated period of time each day, routine procedures such as checking of vitals, blood tests, menu orders and even visitors are all stopped to allow for two hours of quiet time for moms, their partners and their new babies.

So far, the researchers have seen “promising” results, finding a 31 percent decline in total interruptions and a 37.2 percent increase in patient satisfaction for postpartum patients, according to officials.

The study was developed by Holy Cross Nurse Christen Lawrie in collaboration with two of her colleagues, Martha E. F. Highfield and Sherri Mendelson.

However, Lawrie cautioned those that read the report about its “limitations” due to its small sample size and single setting, officials said.

While the sample size was small, the study found patient satisfaction increased, moms valued the bonding time with their new baby, the decline in interruptions may have increased breastfeeding rates and the break period also allowed nurses uninterrupted time to complete their paperwork, according to officials.

However, the study also revealed that it takes some education throughout hospital services to ensure interruptions – except in the case of emergencies – are scheduled around patients’ quiet time.
