Over 10,000 residents have been displaced because of evacuations from the Sand Fire, and Santa Clarita residents have showed an outpouring of love and support by donating -- so much so that many donation areas were at capacity Monday and can take no more.

Though victims have found it tough to handle new living situations and rebuilding from the fire, they have come to truly appreciate the kindness and generosity of their friends, neighbors and other members of the community, a few residents said Tuesday.

James Walsh and Jocelyn Bentley lost their home to the fire in Sand Canyon where they lived off Comet Way. James, a handyman, lost over $10,000 worth of tools and was recently gifted with $3,000 worth of Lowe’s gift cards to help by fellow Sand Canyon resident Jeff Willis who knew he had to help him in his time of need.

“He’s a man who’s trying to work for a living, and he can’t,” Willis said. “He lost all of his tools in the fire and once I heard his story, I knew I had to do something to help make him whole again.”

“We’re getting by, but if anything we could use clothes,” Walsh said. “My girlfriend doesn’t have much to wear, and it would be really helpful if she were to get a few things.”Donate - Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition

Many other residents of the Santa Clarita area have also donated a number of other goods and services to help the victims as much as they can.

“Donations are always welcome to help these fire victims,” said Adele MacPherson of the Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition. “We don’t need as many things donated as we do cash and gift cards. That way all victims can go out and get exactly what they need.”

With numerous other victims losing some things that are irreplaceable, such as antiques and pets, the community only continues to come together to help victims every little bit they can.

  1. Whats your address for donations?

  2. We lost everything and didn’t get an ounce of assistance. Still homeless and going broke trying to rebuild.
