The results of breast augmentations today are vastly different than they were just five years ago, according to Santa Clarita plastic surgeon Dr. Justin B. Heller.

“Really the revolution that’s happened with breast augmentation is in terms of what our options are,” Heller explained. “Silicone-based implants have really gone through a generational change.”
While more traditional implants may have what some would call a “fake” appearance, today’s breast augmentations are performed using a cohesive gel or “gummy bear” implant.
These implants can maintain form with less rippling, resulting in a better look and feel, according to Heller.

“But in addition to all of that, there’s literally thousands of varieties of sizes and shapes,” he said. So it’s no longer the fake look that we used to see five years ago. It now creates this very natural, very subtle look.”
While gel implants can be adjusted to give more or less projection according to the look the woman wants, Heller noted his goal is “to create a natural breast that people can look at and not know that anything has been done, besides being a little bit larger.”
The FDA recommends breast augmentations be re-visited every 10 years, though Heller said some women keep them in “much longer.”
Women who have been through childbirth after having a breast augmentation often come in to exchange the implants out or have a breast lift performed, and most women seeking a breast augmentation are between the ages of 20 and 50 years old.
“There’s kind of two different groups of people that usually come in,” Heller said. “There’s the women that are on their first augmentation, or there’s a little bit later on, they’ve gone through childbirth.”
