“Usually you’ll see bags underneath the eyes — both men and women, we both have it (and) the prevalence is almost equal at this point,” said Heller. “Men are much more comfortable now coming in and really doing a change in terms of their appearance.”

Heller attributes the recent popularity of the lower eyelid procedure to people’s desire to look less tired and to have a more youthful appearance.

“It is what makes you look tired through the day, and via a simple hidden procedure, you can basically get rid of the bags, tighten the membrane and really make that area young again,” Heller said, noting the procedure can help reverse the clock by 10 to 15 years.

As a person gets older, Heller notes, the skin around the eye becomes looser and the weight of the lobe becomes too much for the eyelid, loosening the membrane and causing the fat within the membrane to create a shadow — which is what creates the under-eye bag.

The procedure to get rid of this baggy appearance is what Heller considers simple, and leaves the patient looking more youthful and energized.

“By restoring that membrane to where it was and removing a little bit of the fat and a little of the extra skin, you are able to restore that whole lower eyelid, looking more youthful,” said Heller.

This process is actually one of Heller’s favorite procedures to perform, because it is a simple fix and the recovery time for the patient is usually very short.

“One of my favorite procedures honestly that we do on a regular basis is upper and lower eyelids. We do those in the office all the time,” explained Heller, noting his office has performed around 6-700 of these procedures to date. “The nice thing about them is that it is such a rapid recovery-type procedure that within five days sutures are out, seven days makeup is on and (it) really just rejuvenates the whole face.”
