Santa Clarita resident Thomas Iland is scheduled to speak at the United Nations headquarters in New York for World Autism Awareness Day in April.
Iland, an autism self-advocate, was diagnosed with autism when he was 13 years old and has achieved many of his goals, such as being employed full-time, driving, living on his own and having a girlfriend.
Being invited to such an event is just another goal to be checked off his list.
As a graduate from California State University, Northridge and a certified public accountant, Iland has been able to use his knowledge and experience to help others embrace adulthood.
“I have extensive, first-hand experience in looking for and obtaining employment, creating and maintaining relationships, practicing and educating about safety with law enforcement, and advice about the benefits of making someone’s autism known to them as opposed to being kept a secret,” said Iland in a previous KHTS interview.
Because of this, Iland was invited to speak at the United Nations headquarters for World Autism Awareness Day.
“We would be honored if you would share your personal experience and insights gained through your work to advance the rights with persons with autism,” read Iland’s invitation.
Every year, the event has a different theme, and this year’s theme is “Assistive Technologies, Active Participation,” according to event organizers.

“The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities acknowledges the instrumental role of assistive technologies in enabling persons with autism and other disabilities to exercise their rights and freedoms,” said Director of Outreach Division Maher Nasser. “It obliges states that are party to the Convention to promote availability and use of such technologies at an affordable cost.”
Through his experience, Iland has been able to give presentations, workshops and trainings on a wide range of topics, from autism awareness basics, to safely interacting with police, to helping youth with autism and other disabilities realize their potential.
“I have a mantra that I created: ‘Know yourself, love yourself, be yourself,’” said Iland. “These are my secrets to success.”
Iland says he will take his mother, Emily Iland, to the United Nations headquarters in New York since she has been by his side navigating his autism journey.
“I’m excited; it’s been almost 17 years since I’ve been to New York,” added Iland. “The last time I was there, I sang in Carnegie Hall with Saugus High School after Sept. 11.”
