A scenic destination located in Inyo County, about three hours north of the Santa Clarita Valley, Lone Pine is an ideal travel destination for local residents who are interested in the rich western film tradition it shares with Santa Clarita.
Tickets go on sale for the 27th annual Lone Pine Film Festival 2016 — entitled “A Vision of the American West: A Tribute to the Western Director” on July 25, with the festival set to begin in the early morning hours of Friday, October 7 and end with a closing campfire Sunday evening, October 9.
Attendees can enjoy a weekend of western film fare, including screenings, panels and presentations. Bob White, author of “The Tom Mix Cord: Saga of a Western Film Star’s Classic Motorcar” and owner of Mix’s ’37 Cord, is set to appear at the festival and sign copies of his new book.
The book tells the story of this classic car from personalization to wreckage to restoration. Well documented at every stage, it offers a look at Mix’s unique history in the film industry, circus and his love affair with a 1937 Super Charged Cord that has won nearly thirty awards, according to the film festival’s website.
Mix used the Newhall cottages that still sit as historical buildings on Main Street as a dressing room on several occasions while filming in Santa Clarita.
Formerly the 24200 block of San Fernando Road, the cottages are commercial structures commonly known as the Tom Mix Cottages that were built by Halsey W. Russell in 1919, according to SCVHistory.com.

In addition, Mix shot a film in the Pardee House located on Walnut Street in Newhall in the 1920s.
Now a state point of historical interest, the Pardee House was built circa 1889 by Henry Clay Needham, prohibitionist candidate for president in 1920, according to SCVHistory.com.
The website MyLonePine.com tells Santa Clarita travelers interested in attending the film festival everything they need to know about planning their trip to Lone Pine, and is presented by KHTS AM-1220 in partnership with Bishop radio stations KIBS FM-100.7 and KBOV AM-1230.
Site visitors can also learn about everything the Lone Pine Film History Museum has to offer, including an extensive collection of real movie costumes, cars, props, posters and other memorabilia used during filming in and around Lone Pine, from the early days of “Round Up” to modern blockbusters like “Iron Man.”
