Santa Clarita Sports Report – August 20th

High School Volleyball

The 2019 girls volleyball season opens for most of the Santa Clarita Valley, save for Saugus (opened in the Citrus Valley Tournament over the weekend) and Trinity Classical Academy (opening tomorow @ Providence).

The Centurions went 3-2 over the weekend in the Inland Empire with losses against Chaparral and Oak Hills, and wins over Granite Hills, Elsinore and Oak Hills (2nd match).

Tuesday’s Schedule:

Saugus vs Hoover at 5:00

Eastside vs Golden Valley at 5:00

West Ranch vs Louisville at 6:00

Notre Dame Academy vs Valencia at 6:00

de Toledo vs Santa Clarita Christian at 6:00

Canyon vs Simi Valley at 6:30

Los Angeles Dodgers

Fresh off a stellar seven inning/10 strikeouts/0 earned runs outing in Miami, future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw is back in the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium, hosting the Toronto Blue Jays tonight 7:10 p.m.

While many people thought Kershaw’s best and healthiest days were behind him, he’s quietly gone about his business in 2019 and has a very Kershaw-esque 2.65 ERA, good for fifth in the National League. Thanks to the dominance of Hyun-Jin Ryu and the ascension of Walker Buehler, Kershaw no longer has to carry the weight of an entire rotation on his back. It’s paid off for the Dodgers so far.

Offensively, all eyes are on the finish to the season by MVP candidate Cody Bellinger. Sunday’s homer gave Bellinger the lead in the NL with 42, and he’s tied with Mike Trout for first in the Majors. He’s hit eight home runs in the month of August, already his best month since he hit 10 in April.
