TMU Basketball

Both Master’s Mustangs basketball teams were eliminated in the second round of the NAIA Division 1 Basketball Championship.

The men’s team lost a tough game that was tight from start to finish, 77-75 to Texas Wesleyan. The mustangs led 37-36 at the break, but came up just one possession short in the second half. Top scorers’ Shackelford and Russell combined for a dreadful 10-for-36 shooting from the field, yet the Mustangs were never out of it. They finish with a 27-5 record.

The women’s team ran into a buzzsaw in the top overall seeded Freed-Hardeman, falling 79-58 to the undefeated team from Tennessee. Hannah Forrar led the Mustangs with 15 points in 16 minutes of action. TMU’s season ends at 23-9.

COC Athletics

Glendale snapped the Cougars four-game winning streak Saturday, defeating Canyons 7-4. It was Chase Wheatcroft’s first loss of the season. He surrendered six earned runs in five innings. The Cougars are 4-1 in conference and 11-9 overall.

The Lady Cougars split their back-to-back series with Riverside on Saturday with a 14-9 win and a 6-4 loss. Melanie Abzun drove in five runs in the first game and Azmarheen Anderson launched a home run in the second game. COC is 3-1 in conference play and 13-4-1 overall.

Santa Clarita Storm

Defending has been a major weakness for the Storm through three games, as last night’s 7-2 dismantling by the LA Wolves marked the third straight match Santa Clarita has conceded four or more goals.

The Storm has been outscored 16-4 in three consecutive losses.

Los Angeles Lakers

D’Angelo Russell had his best game as a pro Sunday night at Staples Center, dropping 40 points on 14-for-22 shooting against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on who you talk to), the Lakers were outscored 43-28 in the fourth quarter to go down 125-120.

The Cleveland “Big Three” of Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Kevin Love combined for 101 of the Cavs points.

LA’s 20-50 record is the worst in the Western Conference.
