The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce announced Monday its position on several statewide ballot measures set to be voted on next month.

The networking organization has made their political positions public on a handful of propositions that will appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 6.

Troy Hooper, chairman of the board for the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, was pleased to provide the committee’s stance on propositions this coming election.

“The chamber is pleased to announce our position on several statewide ballot measures that we believe best represent the business interests of those operating in the Santa Clarita Valley,” said Hooper.  “We respect the dedication from groups across the state that gathered the signatures to get the propositions on the statewide ballot. Each proposition was diligently reviewed for how they will affect the business community.”

The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce has taken the following positions on these statewide propositions:

PROPOSITION 1: SUPPORT

“Authorizes $4 billion in general obligation bonds for existing affordable housing programs for low-income residents, veterans, farmworkers, manufactured and mobile homes, infill and transit-oriented housing. Fiscal Impact: Increased state costs to repay bonds averaging about $170 million annually over the next 35 years.” – California Secretary of State summary.

PROPOSITION 2: SUPPORT

“Amends Mental Health Services Act to fund No Place Like Home Program, which finances housing for individuals with mental illness. Ratifies existing law establishing the No Place Like Home Program. Fiscal Impact: Allows the state to use up to $140 million per year of county mental health funds to repay up to $2 billion in bonds. These bonds would fund housing for those with mental illness who are homeless.” – California Secretary of State summary.

PROPOSITION 6: SUPPORT

“Repeals a 2017 transportation law’s taxes and fees designated for road repairs and public transportation. Fiscal Impact: Reduced ongoing revenues of $5.1 billion from state fuel and vehicle taxes that mainly would have paid for highway and road maintenance and repairs, as well as transit programs.” – California Secretary of State summary.

PROPOSITION 10: OPPOSE

“Repeals state law that currently restricts the scope of rent control policies that cities and other local jurisdictions may impose on residential property. Fiscal Impact: Potential net reduction in state and local revenues of tens of millions of dollars per year in the long term. Depending on actions by local communities, revenue losses could be less or considerably more.” – California Secretary of State summary.

“The Chamber encourages everyone to register to vote and to get out to vote on election day,” said John Musella, acting executive director for the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce. “If you have moved or are unsure of your registration, now is the time to get registered to vote.”

The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce endorsement process was overseen by a bipartisan committee of chamber members, which reviewed ballot initiatives that the chamber felt would best represent the business interests of the Santa Clarita Valley, according to officials.

The chamber did not endorse every ballot measure that will appear on the November 6, 2018 ballot.
