Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call Thursday afternoon, when a suspect allegedly stole a SUV in Canyon Country and drove it into the Santa Clara River, according to officials.

“Observant citizens called the station on Thursday afternoon, reporting that they saw an adult male Hispanic drive a silver Hyundai Santa Fe onto a Canyon Country bike path at a high rate of speed, and into the wash,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Witnesses said they had seen Juan Paz, the 27 year-old Hispanic driving the vehicle, wearing a hat, blue jersey, and a flannel shirt.
“Deputies arrived to the location and found a vehicle in the wash below Sierra Highway and Sandy Drive,” said Shirley Miller.

An adult male Hispanic was spotted at the scene, however the suspect was wearing different clothing then what was reported.
Upon closer observation, deputies noticed in his hands the same items the suspect was described as wearing, a hat, flannel shirt, and blue jersey, according to deputies.
Deputies determined after further investigation, he was an acquaintance to the car thief who had given him different clothes to wear in attempt to confuse law enforcement.
Angel Rodriguez, 31 year-old Hispanic male of Pacoima was arrested by deputies on a felony charge of being an accessory to a crime.
“The vehicle license plate was checked on the SUV and contact was made with the rightful owner who said that he did not give permission for anyone to drive his car, and he was in possession of both sets of keys.” said Miller.

The owner of the vehicle said that he last parked his SUV on Jakes Way and Sandy Drive.
Through their investigation, deputies found methamphetamine inside the vehicle as well as burglary tools, and multiple pieces of mail belonging to other people.
Juan Paz, was arrested and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on felony charges.
Court dates haven’t been set at this time, as detectives are investigating to see if these two are connected with any other thefts in the area.
