Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced Wednesday the California Assembly has approved a bill to “streamline” SCV Water Board vacancies.
Senate Bill 387 is a follow-up legislation to SB 634, which created the Santa Clarita Valley regional water district in 2017, according to Wilk’s office.
“This measure will save taxpayers money by streamlining how board vacancies are to be handled,” said Wilk. “SCV Water is off to a great start. It has already saved ratepayers $5 million dollars in its first year of operation and will be a role model for any new water agencies — which is why it is important to get this right. I am grateful to my colleagues for their support.”
SB 634 requires the board to reduce its membership total from 15 to nine, according to officials

The new bill, SB 387, addresses technical issues regarding the consolidation of multiple boards of directors when there is a vacancy on the board. Rather than holding costly special elections, the board would have the authority to eliminate a vacant position at the agency, if the seat is already required to be consolidated, according to Wilk’s office.
The California Society of Municipal Finance Officers and the Government Finance Officers Association recognized the Santa Clarita Water Agency’s FY 2018/19 budget for meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
SB 387 is now set to go to the governor for final approval, according to officials.
