Soroptimist Of Valencia Presents Donation To Henry Mayo Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center

Soroptimist International of Valencia presented a donation Friday of about $30,000 to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

The funds are proceeds from the “Bras for a Cause” fundraiser, which is an annual event to raise money and awareness of breast cancer, according to Laura F. Chesler, annual giving officer for the Henry Mayo Foundation.

“We are so grateful to Soroptimist International of Valencia for their support every year via their biggest fundraiser,” said Marlee Lauffer, foundation president, who accepted the check.

The all-volunteer group has raised upwards of $170,000 for the center since 2001, according to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials.

“Funds are dedicated to providing screening and follow-up services for underserved women in treatment for breast cancer,” Lauffer said.

The almost two decades of support for the breast center has supported hundreds of women that would not otherwise be able to afford preventative services or breast cancer treatment, according to Chesler.

The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center was created through the experiences of breast cancer survivors, patients and their families, according to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials.

The center’s goal is to improve access to breast imaging services by making it easier for women to have their annual mammograms, and to reduce the anxiety associated with breast cancer detection, according to their website.

The imaging center offers Hologic 3D digital mammography machines and diagnostic workstations for higher image quality that enables early detection while being able to look at multiple layers of breast tissue – helping to detect cancer earlier, according to officials.

Sheila R. Veloz has a “holistic” approach with surgeons and pathologists present during a surgery, to help ensure all the cancer is removed.
