County officials have issued flash flood warnings for the Santa Clarita Valley, and there’s also a map available for where residents can pick up up to 10 sandbags from Santa Clarita Valley fire stations.
If residents are curious about whether they need a sandbag, or best practices for how to use them to protect property, the county offers a 24-hour toll-free hotline, (800) 675-HELP (4357), which provides homeowners with recommendations on how to prevent damage utilizing sandbags, k-rails and deflection walls to protect individual properties.
The city and county also cautioned motorists against driving through any standing or moving water, even if it looks shallow.
In 2015, the most recent year data is available, flash flooding and worse claimed 176 lives across the country, and nearly two-thirds of those deaths were believed to be caused by vehicles being submerged on flooded roads, according to Sheriff’s Department data.

Here’s a look at the road closures slated to affect commuter traffic:
Based on the forecast of heavy rain, snow and icy road conditions, the Los Angeles County Public Works Department will close public access to the following road segments prior to the upcoming storm.
- Bouquet Canyon Road, between the gates approximately six miles south of Spunky Canyon Road, (near Mile Marker 12.55, just south of Big Oaks Lodge), to the southern boundary of Angeles National Forest (near Mile Marker 15.97, two miles north of Vasquez Canyon Road), will be closed at 9 PM on Thursday, Feb. 16
- Angeles Forest Highway, between Aliso Canyon Road and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road, will be closed at 3 AM on Friday, Feb. 17.
Local access will not be permitted until the road closures are lifted. The closures will remain in effect until the storm system has passed and the roads have been inspected.
