“Three lunar events will come together in an unusual overlap that’s being playfully called a super blue blood moon,” NASA said in news release last week. “The second full moon in January will take place on the 31st, making it the first blue moon of 2018.”

The event is also in alignment with a supermoon, according to NASA officials.

“(A supermoon is when the moon) appears slightly larger and brighter than usual because it occurs when the Moon is near its perigee, or the closest point in its orbit to Earth,” said the NASA news release.

In addition, a lunar eclipse will take place in the morning on Jan. 31, temporarily giving the Moon a reddish color known as a blood moon, according to officials.

Santa Clarita residents will be able to see the trifecta anomaly at sunrise alongside other stargazers from throughout North America, Alaska and Hawaii., according to officials.

“Weather permitting, the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii will have a spectacular view of totality from start to finish,” said George Johnston, a lunar blogger at NASA, in a press statement.

Following this alignment of three celestial events, officials have predicted the next visible lunar eclipse will be on January 21, 2019.
