Supporters have gathered together to ‪“Keep Lexi Home” in Saugus after a petition surfaced designed to keep a six-year-old girl with her foster parents instead of leaving for Utah due to her being part Native American.

The “peaceful protest” began at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning after it was reported that officials with the Los Angeles County of Child and Family Services would arrive later in the day to take Lexi away from the home.

The girl has been with her foster family, the Pages, for the past four years, since she was two.

“Lexi has been with a loving, stable family for nearly five years,” according to a petition to keep Lexi with the family, “and is thriving and a happy, healthy little girl.”

However, a stipulation in the Indian Child Welfare Law, which was passed in the 1970s to keep Native American tribes together, may force her to leave her family and move permanently to Utah to “live with a non-blood related family,” according to the petition.

Supporters trying to keep Lexi with her foster family have gathered by the dozen near the family home in Saugus.

Susan Whitman, one of the supporters, knows the family through her son, who goes to the same elementary school as one of the Page children. The family is nothing but supportive, she said.

“I’m here for Lexi,” Whitman said. “They’re a nice, loving family.”

She said that she joined the protest when she learned that Lexi may have to go through being “removed from her current home and out to Utah, to a family who she doesn’t really know.”

For some familiar with the case, the reasoning of county officials in moving Lexi is “without logic.”

“We don’t know why they’re doing this,” said Lauren Axline, the former foster social worker for Lexi’s case. “The family they’re trying to send her to isn’t even tribal. They’re (distant relatives) who have only been in the picture for two years of the four Lexi has been with her foster parents.”

Another supporter, John Beck, believes the turnout for the protest and continued support of the community speaks to the amount of care Lexi receives in Santa Clarita.

“It’s really heartening to see extended family, church family and the community come out to support the Pages,” he said. “In that family you see something that is really working They’re phenomenal people.”

Rusty and Summer Page, Lexi’s foster parents, thanked the group for their support.

“Having everybody here means the world to us,” said Summer Page. “Even though we haven’t been fighting this battle on our own, it definitely has felt like (we have) because we haven’t been able to tell everybody what’s going on. But we know you guys have been praying for us all along.”

  1. Moving.that child would cause trauma that would effect her for the rest of her life. Please for Lexi’s sake, let’s pray that God will move the system and allow Lexi to stay with this.family that she is bonded to.
