Top Santa Clarita Sports Stories Of 2019

As we take a look back at the year in review, there was plenty of special moments in Santa Clarita sports. The top stories of 2019:

#SaugusStrong

One of, if not the most, horrifying of tragedies struck the Saugus High School campus on the morning of November 14, 2019. Armed with a pistol, a student shot five students, killing two, before turning the gun on himself and ending his life.

Our community continues to heal, and one of the most powerful representations of the healing process came just a day later and the West Ranch playoff football game. Students from schools around Santa Clarita came out to show solidarity and support, and the Saugus students led a beautiful halftime remembrance. There was a special energy in the air that night.

The Wildcats rallied from down 21 points to win 57-56 in the game of the season.

Abbey Weitzeil Breaks 50-yard Free American Record

Abbey Weitzeil has had an illustrious swimming career, and with the olympics fast-approaching, we can only hope more is to come from the Saugus grad. She won Silver earlier in the year. She wow’d the NCAA Division I swimming world a few weeks ago by becoming the first woman to break 21 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle swim.

Herrington Reaches 300 Career Wins

Mike Herrington spent 31 seasons as the head football coach of the Hart Indians, overseeing championship teams and great players. He etched his name in another record book with his 300th career win on September 27th, a 19-13 triumph over Downey.

Herrington is called it a career after the 2019 season, and will retire with 304 career wins.

Former Hart Pitcher Tyler Glasnow’s Fast Start With Tampa Bay

Tyler Glasnow suffered an injury in May, but for the first six weeks of the season he was arguably the best pitcher in Major League Baseball. He was 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA through his first five starts.

Unfortunately, the injury would steal away the majority of his 2019 season. Glasnow returned late in the year and made a postseason start for the Rays, but he was unable to regain the form he displayed pre-injury.

With a full, healthy offseason he can return to the top level he showed at the beginning of the year.

Colton Herta Becomes Youngest Winner In IndyCar History

Eighteen year old Colton Herta of Valencia won the IndyCar Classic at Circuit of the Americas this past March, making history in IndyCar as the youngest winner.

Racing for Harden-Steinbrenner Racing Team, Herta won in just his third career race in the IndyCar Series. The rookie previously raced in the Indy Lights series from 2017-2018 before being picked up by Harden-Steinbrenner for the 2019 season.
