“We’ve got the lodge buttoned up and we’ve got some duck and pheasant hunters in, but looking forward to a wonderful holiday here in Montana and … to next year’s fishing season,” says John Sampson, owner of Ruby Springs Lodge.

Because of the freezing cold weather in Montana, it makes the perfect time for a winter adventure.

“We’ve got a group coming up, of all places, from Riverside, California … for a duck and pheasant group, and then we’ll shut the lodge down and let the employees enjoy a nice holiday with their family,” Sampson said. “And as I look out the window right now, I’ve got a fire going and there’s about six inches of snow on the ground, and it definitely makes it feel like the holiday season — Christmas is coming.”

Talking about Montana’s exotic locations to do unusual adventures like fly fishing, Sampson explains, “You’ve got some special places in California, no question, like the beach, but … if you haven’t taken a visit up here, I encourage you to do so. It’s unique compared to what you would be used to from southern California. A lot of corporate groups come up, a lot of husband/wife groups, a lot of father/son groups — and everybody comes for an adventure.”

Santa Clarita Valley residents have one more reason to visit Ruby Springs Lodge in Montana, according to Sampson.

“You can go take an adventure and go golfing for the weekend. You can go to Mexico and sit on the beach. You can put a picture of that up in your office or on your mantle over the fireplace, but you put a picture of somebody holding a brown or a rainbow trout with the mountains in the background and the beautiful river in front of them, it’s really unique,” he explained. “It sets you apart and it’s a conversation piece, and people see that picture on the mantle and they’ll say, ‘Wow, where did you go?’’

Fly fishing can be an interesting sport, and any fly fishing groups from the Santa Clarita Valley who can plan a trip to Montana can take advantage of the services provided by Ruby Springs Lodge.

“At Ruby Springs, we make it so easy,” Sampson said. “Don’t feel as though you’ll be uncomfortable. Come on out — it’s one guide for two people and we do everything. It includes your rods, your reels, your waders, your instruction and your private cabin with beautiful amenities and some of the nicest food in the state of Montana.”

Fly fishing season starts up again in April and runs through November, according to Sampson.

“Spring is a lovely time to come, April and May,” he said. “Very few people (are) out on the water, the fish are biting eagerly.”

Sampson encourages SCV residents to visit the lodge’s website, call for a reservation, and even get a gift certificate as a holiday gift.
