La Mesa Jr. High student Dane Cannon spearheads local food drive.
It all started while watching an episode of “Moment of Truth”, when 7th grader Dane Cannon got a great idea for a community service project. The show, which airs on Fox, features contestants answering 21 embarrassing and personal questions while being monitored by a lie detector, in hopes of winning half a million dollars.
“We were watching TV, and this one girl was asked if she really cared about the little kids in Africa, and she said, ‘no’, and Dane was so surprised that someone could honestly not care about the kids. And I told him, ‘Maybe, she cares about the kids in her community.’ And then he decided to help out people here in Santa Clarita,” says Dane’s mother, Mindy Cannon.
As a part of La Mesa’s Honor Society, Dane was assigned to complete a community service project. Even though he was given a hand out with possible ideas, after watching “Moment of Truth” he had an even better idea. Some of his friends were Boy Scouts, and had done food drives before, so he decided to start his own.
Dane and three of his best friends began organizing the drive, and after weeks of planning, Dane is hoping the drive will have a big impact on the Food Pantry right here in our valley.
