A Cure For Cemex?

McKeon to announce some form of agreement Friday morning.

Tomorrow morning, one of the biggest fights in the City of Santa Clarita’s history may see a light at the end of the tunnel. Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon will announce new legislation that includes an agreement between Santa Clarita, Cemex, and the City of Victorville.

“We’ve got some real good progress to report,” McKeon told KHTS.

Specifics of the agreement have not yet been made available, however they will be disclosed at the press conference.

Cemex has owned the mineral rights on a section of land off of Soledad Canyon Road and has been permitted to mine in the area. As first proposed, Cemex looked to take enough sand and gravel out of the mine to fill the Rose Bowl 127 times. The resulting consequences to the City of Santa Clarita would have included hundreds of truck trips daily on our roads, damage to air quality, and suspected home value decreases.

After years of opposition, the City and Cemex announced a truce in February of 2007 and extended it the following December.  At the time of the truce, all sides said they were working together to find a mutually agreeable solution.

Now that an agreement seems to have been reached, McKeon’s federal legislation would have to be passed by Congress to complete the deal.

KHTS will be at the announcement tomorrow morning, and we will report the breaking details on hometownstation.com and AM-1220 within minutes of their release.
