Alex Urbina invited Erin Aquaviva, a survivor of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, to the latest “The Alex Urbina Radio Show” on KHTS to open up a discussion.

“Today is a beautiful day of recovery and healing … after one of the most horrific acts of violence that Santa Clarita has ever experienced,” Urbina said. “I think that in recovery and (the) healing process, people are in search of trying to find ‘the why’ so that they can grab onto a reason that makes sense to them so that they can keep moving on.”

Urbina asked Aquaviva about her healing process after the Las Vegas tragedy, and what her perspective was on the need to know why the gunman did what he did that night.

“My experience with ‘the why’ being somebody who has gone through an experience of running from an active shooter was fairly quick,” she said. “My ‘why’ was already, this was a human being that was suffering.”

However, Aquaviva noted that her husband — who she said is more of the “rational, logical” thinker over an emotional one, needed “hard facts about why or how this could happen.”

“But the answer is different for everybody,” Aquaviva said. “I would say, do what you need to do and be where you need to be in your process, and if your process is researching and finding that ‘why’ for however long it takes so that you can take that next step, do that.”

Urbina pointed out that learning the reasons why a mass shooting occurred is not about justifying the shooter’s actions.

“I don’t want you to see it in the distinction of trying to justify, because that’s not what we’re doing here,” Urbina explained. “We’re trying to give you a possibility of looking at it from an understanding of what would have caused somebody to do this so it can help give you a tool to help you move forward.”

While Aquaviva’s healing process was filled with tears and looking inside herself, she added that for someone else, their process could be centered around being around people they love or doing normal activities they enjoy, “and a million different things in between,” she said.

Instead of comparing one’s own healing process to another person’s, Urbina encouraged those affected by the Saugus High shooting not to judge themselves or others’ unique process.

“It’s an individual journey that each person’s going to have to go through,” he said.

Acquaviva seconded this, adding, “We’re made beautifully and differently, and everybody’s process gets to be honored. I think that’s the tough part — there’s an expectation about what the healing process looks like, and if we can, let go of that and honor everybody’s process and how they heal and be there for one another and be a human being.”
