“What I realized upon my own awakening … of my conscious and authentic self, I have to really get clear that in order to do that, I have to keep shutting down my ego,” Urbina said. “My journey of consciousness is really about, every day, all day long, every moment, every minute is to keep shutting down the ego.”

By consciously banishing his ego to “have a seat in the corner,” Urbina noted he is able to authentically interact with loved ones as his loving, vulnerable and compassionate self.

The purpose of the ego is to protect the individual by preventing them from being vulnerable and authentic, according to Urbina.

“Its job is to create this alternative persona to project ourselves in the world,” he explained.

When ego is left unchecked, it can prompt a person to wear nicer clothes or spend extra time getting “dolled up” in the morning in order to get the acceptance and attention it needs.

“When you’re authentically who you are, your spirit, you don’t need outside approval — you don’t need somebody to say you look beautiful today or you look nice,” Urbina said. “So therefore we can be freed up to be able to choose from our spirit rather than from ego.”

The only way to do this, Urbina continued, is through self awareness. For instance, if a person is running late in the morning, they can make the conscious decision to skip a few steps during their routine of getting ready.

“There’s a part of you that has a little switch inside, and you flip it,” Urbina said. “You go, ‘You know what? I’m not even going to worry about this.’ Maybe you leave your makeup bag behind or you skip a certain protocol that you’ve been doing for so long, and you realize in that moment — ‘I don’t care.’”

Getting a “glimpse” into the power of letting your ego go in that moment can help propel you forward on your journey of self awareness, and therefore continue to make the conscious decision to let your ego go in the future.

“It’s that little brief moment where your spirit says real silently, ‘You’re beautiful. You don’t need that,’” Urbina said. “It’s not something that you have to have with you, because you get to just be who you are. You get to just wear your heart on your sleeve and just be that — be the loving, authentic, compassionate you and trust that by being that and by shining that light, that other people will recognize your beauty in that.”
