Castaic Mountain Lion Cub Recovering, Expected To Be Released Back Into Wild

The injured Mountain lion cub rescued from a Castaic neighborhood last month is continuing to recover and is now undergoing rehabilitation.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) officials announced Tuesday that a mountain lion cub captured in Castaic two weeks ago has been transferred to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue for ongoing care with the goal of returning her to the wild.

The 6-month-old female cub was captured Jan. 21, after Castaic residents spotted her lying in the roadway near Hillcrest Parkway and Olympic Street.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists captured the cub following a nearly three-hour effort, and transported her to a nearby veterinary hospital for evaluation.

While the exact cause of her injuries remains unknown, officials said that the working theory was that the cub may have been struck by a vehicle.

CDFW officials said the cub is trending in a positive direction and continues to make progress toward rehabilitation.

In a statement, CDFW thanked the Castaic community and several partner organizations, including Twin Oaks Equine, the Los Angeles Zoo and Flying Tails, for their assistance in the rescue and recovery effort.
