“Welcoming a dog or cat that is in need of a home at any point is a great thing, so why not do it on Valentine’s Day?” said Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre.

As the sponsor of the KHTS Adopt a Pet video feature series, Ronchetto regularly supports adoption from animal shelters and rescues in the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond.

Those looking for a specific breed can turn to a reputable breeder for their new four-legged companion, but Ronchetto noted that shelters and rescues often have purebred pets as well.

“You can get a lot of purebred dogs at the shelters too — we see all kinds,” she said.

While some people may hesitate to choose adoption because they think the pets were given up because of behavioral issues, Ronchetto continued that this is usually not the case, and that many homeless dogs and cats end up in shelters and rescues through no fault of their own.

“Situations are all different, so don’t go into it thinking there’s something (that’s) going to be wrong, because most of the time, they’re beautiful, loving pets,” Ronchetto said. “They just have not had great luck in life.”

A few local options Santa Clarita residents can look into include the Castaic Animal Shelter, St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary and Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita, all of which are KHTS Adopt a Pet partners.

Once a month, KHTS spotlights a dog or cat in need of a home from one of these organizations with a video and article telling the pet’s story, which are then published both on the KHTS website and Facebook page.

Since the creation of the series in August 2016, more than 100 pets in need of homes have been showcased, and a total of 109 of these animals have been adopted so far.

Ronchetto concluded, “Go in with an open heart and mind and see what they’ve got, because you can bring home your new best friend on Valentine’s Day.”

  1. Dr. Ronchetto is right. Not all animals at the shelters or with other rescues are “problem” companions.

Many have been given up to reasons as varied as their humans losing their home – or moving to where animals of their size are not permitted. Some may have health issues – and any shelter or rescue will disclose if they are aware of any medical issue – but not all who give up their animals disclose – as the person/family giving up their animals may feel ashamed for not having the resources to help the beloved animals and prefer not to say anything.

Sometimes, you run across those older and senior animals that for no reason are just given up by their family – usually it’s because they say they have no time or are no longer wanted – those poor creatures have done nothing wrong and deserve to live the remainder of their lives with dignity in a warm and safe home!

Whats so great about the people of Santa Clarita is that there are so many who wish to help these animals with a home. It may take some re-thinking that you’ve wanted a purebred puppy – and now you are considering fostering and/or adopting what not appear to be a purebred or senior from the shelter or rescue – the rewards to you, your family and the animal you bring into your home are enormous!
