Disney’s “Newsies,” the Broadway musical, holds its opening night at the Canyon Theatre Guild (CTG) on Saturday.

The live musical is scheduled to open Saturday night, March 25 at 8 p.m. and run through April 30.

The stage production is directed by Jennifer Teague, a returning director to the CTG. Her past productions include Matilda, Jekyll and Hyde, and Little Women.

“I love a good story about an underdog, and the fact that it’s rooted in history makes it even better,” Teague said. “Being a teacher, I have a heart for children and I have a number of them in the show!”

The show is notable for its “high energy” dance numbers including backflips, leaping and tap dancing. Choreography for the production was created by Kasmira Buchanan.

“It has been a choreographer’s dream to spend 4 months workshopping with such a talented, enthusiastic, and hardworking cast,” Buchanan said. “The stage is bubbling at the seams with over 30 people, backflipping, leaping, stunting, and tap dancing. It is truly a joyful experience. Come see CTG’s Newsies- they are about to make Headlines!”

“Newsies” is set in 1899 New York City, and follows Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a group of “newsies” as they tackle news publishers’ unfair rise of prices at the expense of the “newsies.” The Broadway musical is based on the 1992 film from Disney.
